John Mendenhall bought 300 acres in PA from William Penn on Sept. 14, 1681, when he was still living in England- cost 6 pounds per 500 acres.
In 1682, John Mendenhall's father, Thomas Mendenhall, died and left John a cottage and two gardens in Marridge, Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England (lately purchased of Thomas Stockbridge)and one close of land or pasture (abt. 5 acres)lying in Marridge heath (lately purchased by Thomas Mendenhall from Nathaniel Stoneham), and a close of arable pasture, part of "great Rashlett Coppice", in parish of Ramsbury (7 acres), and all the tenths and tithes the said 7 acres and half of arable land or pasture towards his better preferment in marrriage. He was also asked to pay as a condition of his inheritance the sum of 40 pounds to his brother, Benjamin Mendenhall, when he came into possession.
On Feb.6,1683 Wm. Penn requested a survey of the land John Mendenhall had purchased in the colonies- in Concord township, PA. John Mendenhall was the first recorded purchaser of land in Concord township, PA-patent of June 27, 1684.
"..probably in the autumn of 1682 (after the death of his father, Thomas III Mendenhall, who died in July, 1682) that John made the voyage to PA." No record available of his passage, but "it is likely that it sailed from the port of Bristol, England, and that he was accompanied by sister, Mary, and younger brother, Benjamin. Concord township was then Chester Co., PA. Court records indicate that John "Mynall" served as a juror in 1683 in Chester Co. and was also appointed constable for Concord, Liberty township, PA.
A later court hearing accuses John Mendenhall and John Harding of "selling whiskey to Indians. .as a means of ensuring that the Indians would not steal their hogs."
John Mendenhall sold 100 acres of his land to his brother-in-law, Thomas Martin (who married sister, Margaret Mendenhall, in England and then immigrated to America with his wife, 4 children, and Margaret's brother, Moses Mendenhall)on Nov. 27,1686, and placed the remainder in a trust for his 3 sons (by first wife, E. Maris) in 1692.
John Mendenhall donated land for the new (Quaker)Concord Meeting House, stables and graveyard in 1697, "for the consideration of one peppercorn per year forever".
John Mendenhall bought an additional 250 acres from John Harding (who had purchased the tract from William Penn in England in Sept., 1681) in 1684 (land patent). These 250 acres he assigned to his brother, Benjamin Mendenhall, in June, 1686. John Mendenhall was also an original shareholder in the Concord Mill - one of 5 in Chester County, PA.
