Melville, known as Grampie to his grandchildren and Mel to those
close to him, had to drop out of high school a couple of months
before graduation to go to work to assist the family. Since he
was so close to graduation, Stetson H.S. in Randolph, MA gave
    him his diploma.

Mel could fix anything. He worked for Burroughs and fixed
business machine. When he got the family their first
television, the kids were all excited. However, he proceeded to
take it all apart to see how it worked. By that evening, it was
all back together again and working perfectly. He was known in
the state of Massachusetts as the man to have when no one else
could fix something. In his basement, he kept many washing
    machines that he repaired too.
