The following is a transcription of a letter and information sent to Elizabeth O'Dell by her grandfather, Thomas Aden O'Dell, before his death. The date of the letter is unknown.

    "My Dear Beth,
You wanted certain information, which I have put down, some of this is handed down from parents and so forth, some as I remember, some I witnessed.
I hope it will help you in your efforts and thank you for calling on me to help.
You know there is a lot more that comes to me from time to time, and I am not sure of.
I am told the English of O'Dell is Odle.
That O'Dell simply means of a Certain Dell in Ireland.
Some names are from what I can remember, not necessary true.
You ask what they did in the Old Country, I know that some were farmers, others tradesmen.
There is still Flannigan's and O'Dell's in Ireland and other related family names in Scotland and England.
Well will see you this Spring I hope.

In the late 18th Century, John O'Dell of Dell Ireland immigrated to the United States, settling in the Illinois Territory, in what is now Hamilton County.
He was a married man with a family, the size I do not know, but one son Thomas, married a girl whose family name is Bethel, and their son Timuel married Nancy Johnson and their son Charles married Sallie Flannigan and their son Thomas A. married Winnifred Wiley and their son Charles A. married Pauline Williams and their daughter Elizabeth?

In about 1760, George Flannigan came to the United States from Ireland, while on the trip at sea his wife gave birth to a son, who was given the name of Robert, she died and was buried at sea.
Mr. Flannigan landed at Boston, and was married to a girl whose family name was Cantrell, they moved west to the Illinois Territory around 1800, he was old and died soon.
Robert had married a girl Kate from the Culpeper family and they brought their family to Illinois also.
Their son Richard married Ollie Adkisson, their son John married Mary McFarland and settled near Akin, Illinois, in Franklin County.
Their son James Wallace, married Katie Waller, their Daughter Sallie Ann married Charles Kates O'Dell, their son Thomas A. married Winnifred L. Wiley, their son Charles A. married Pauline Williams, their daughter Elizabeth married ?

Tim O'Dell my (Thomas) grandfather did not serve in the civil war though he had brothers who did.
His wife Nancy Johnson O'Dell's brother Charlie was a captain and served well.
There were others, that are hard to remember, this I know, they served on the North Side.
Tim was a very big man, 6'8 or 9" tall, he stooped to go thru doors. Following is a story I heard.
'County Court was in session, the Judge entered; He sit down; the Baliff said, 'Be seated', Every one sit down.
The Judge said, 'Baliff have that man in the rear to sit down'.
The Baliff went back and returned to the Judge. He said, 'Your Honor the man is sitting down'.
The Judge said, 'Then have him to stand up'.
That was my Grandpa Timual O'Dell.
Most of the O'Dell's had brown eyes though my Grandma Nancy had blue eyes. She was mostly English and Scotch descent, I don't know when the Johnson came to America.
Many of the O'Dell's were quite tall, one cousin Fifer was 7' tall. He served in France in the 1st World War.

They were business people and farmers, my grandfater (sic) James Wallace was, what in those days was known as a trader, Real Estate Man and Land Holder, he held large estates at times.
In Southern Illinois there is a Flannigan Township, it's a well known name.
James W. was an accomplished musician and won awards on the Violin, every one of his eight children (4 boys, 4 girls) played instruments.
He served in the Civil War, became a Lieutenant, his fater (sic) was a Captain in the Illinois Armed Forces, and earned the name of 'Fire Away Flannigan'.
James Wallace was tall (as I remember) and straight as an arrow, 6' or so tall, about 190 lbs. in weight. He had black sharp eyes, and long brown and gray hair, parted and roached up. He drove a shiney buggy to do business. His favored horse was named Red Wings, a beautiful sorrel mare.
They lived in a grand two story home, and had a large breeding farm.
Romance Angle: My Mother Sallie Ann rode a horse side saddle to do her courting. My Father's favored riding horse was name 'Old Doc'."

    - This concludes the writings of Thomas Aden O'Dell in reference to his family recollections.

23 Aug 1999: Donna and Shirley went to Hamilton and Franklin Counties in Illinois to do more research. We found a copy of a delayed birth certificate for Thomas Aden O'Dell in the Franklin County Recorder's office. The birth certificate was filed 10 May 1941, attested by Sarah Ann O'Dell, and does not use the name Odle. However, birth records for Thomas' siblings show that they were born as Odle, not O'Dell.
