    John Jackson's brother, Willis, son of William and Phoebe Medlin, also
    enlisted in Company I, 48th Regiment, at Camp Mangum in March 1862. He
    was wounded, it is recorded, in the right thigh at the Battle of
    Antietam, Maryland in September 1862. He was furloughed to go home and
    heal until March 1863. He returned to his Company in May 1864 and
    served, still suffering it is said of his wounds. Willis was known to
    have been wounded a second time at the Battle of Sharpsburg and was taken
    prisoner. He was held without parole because he refused to take an
    oath. After General Lee's surrender Willis grudgingly took an oath and
    was released sometime around the middle of October 1865.
    Willis Medlin, Pvt., Company I, 48th Regiment, enrolled at age 23 at Camp
    Mangum, March 20, 1862.
    The next record of him is with the 2nd Div., 2nd Army Corp. Hospital,
    Diagnosis: Wound, right thigh.
    Received at Antietam, MD September 7, 1862. He was admitted to
    Chimborozo Hospital, October 24, 1862. The medical director's office
    issued a wounded furlough on November5, 1862 for 40 days. He received a
    commutation for rations while on a wounded furlough of 40 days from the
    November 8 to December 18, 1862. (40 days at $.33 = $13.20). He also
    received a wounded furlough February 17 to March 17, 1863 (40 days at
    $.33 = $13.20)
    Other records show that he was present with his company from May 1863 to
    October 1865.
    He had been wounded near Sharpsburg and taken prisoner.
