    “Porter, Jonathan, Salem, 1637; then had grant of land; freeman, 1641; had Mary bapt., 1645; and Jonathan, 1645; was of Beverly side. Mary married, 1669, Thomas Gardner.” -- “Porter, Jonathan, Salem, 1636; a sergeant in 1647, and that year had grant of 200 acres; was selectman, 1653 and 4 but late in that year conveyed his estate at S. to James Chichester on condition that he should provide for his widow Eunice if she outlived him, and removed to Huntington, L. I.; had died before 1660, when Eunice sued for her right that year, and in 1670 estate was divided to the heirs, who were all females.     “Jonathan Porter. . .The earliest appearance of his name at Salem is dated 1636 when he receives a grant of 20 acres (Collections of Essex Institute, vol. I, 24). He received another grant in 1654 of 10 acres (Ibid. vol. I, 179). In 1650 he was freed from training. In September, 1654 Frances Nurce sued Jonathan Porter and wife Eunice for slander. . .Jonathan Porter was a Sergeant in 1647, received grant of 200 acares in September, 1647, was selectman in 1653-54 but late in 1654 sold his estate at Salem to James Chichester on condition that he provide for his widow Eunice, if she should outlive him, and removed to Huntington, Long Island, where he died in or before 1660, at which time Eunice Porter sued for her rights at Salem, November, 1660, and that in 1670 the estate was divided among the heirs where were wives of James Chichester, Edward Harnett, and Stephen Jarvis. Eunice Porter is indicated in the Salem Frist Church records as having removed in 1659 or earlier. On June 19, 1660 Eunice Porter, widow of Jonathan Porter, of Huntington, Long Island, appointed Roger Haskoll of Salem as her attorney in regard to interests of hers in Salem. . .The widow Porter later married Giles Smith of Fairfield, Conn. On May 1, 1661 Giles Smith of Fairfield agrees to pay the three daughters of Jonathan Porter, late of Huntington, dec’d, viz. Elizabeth, Eunice, and Mary, or their heirs if any of the three sisters should die before their mother Eunis Smith. . .Eunice Porter, married James Chischester, before 1654.     “At court November Term, 1660, Edmond Grover deposed that he was a near neighbor to Jonathan and Eunice Porter, and that Eunice was more willing to sell her house to Osmond Trask than Jonathan was.     “Farmer John Porter," William Dodge, and Roger Haskell, all of Salem, were to view the highway at Lynn [June Term, 1660]. With Major William Hathorn and Jeffrey Massey, William Dodge was appointed a commissioner to bound out the thirds of Eunice, the widow of Jonathan Porter [November Term, 1660].”
