    “We find the name of Giles Smith, at Hartford, in 1639; at New London, in 1647; at Fairfield, in 1651. These are doubtless one and the same person.     “Smith, Giles. Born abt. 1603, since he was freed from training Apr. 1663, having then attained age of 60. Settled in Hartford by 1639, where he received land ‘by courtesy of the town’; not a proprietor or freeman. He wrote letter to John Winthrop, Jr., at New London, 22 Feb. 1649, saying he was coming to settle there. Here he was one of the earliest settlers, but shortly rem. to Fairfield, wher he entered for record 17 Dec. 1651, land purchased form George Stuckey, and by 1658 bought land also from John Fossecar and William Hayden. He d. in 1669. . .Will 10 Sept 1669, proved 14 Jan 1669 [1669/70]; to wife, Est. I had with her, mentioning her former husband Jonathan Porter; sons Samuel, Eluzy, John; daus.     Richard Ogden “settled in Fairfield, where he was the miller. Know all men. . .that I Giles Smith of Fairfield; doe binde my selfe, my Heires, Executors and Administrators to pay unto the three Daughters of Jonathan Porter late of Huntington Deseased (viz) Elizabeth, Eunis, and Mary; or to their Heirs (in Case that any of the sd. three sisters Die before their Mother) the full and Just summe of twenty pounds sterling, at the Decease of their Mother Eunis Smith. . .this twenty first of May 1661.
