Philip Protheroe of Bristol (St Augustine, 1769), Mountague Street, St James Ward (1771 Militia list), Great George Street and Over Court, Glos., Merchant Venturer (involved in the West India Trade) and Banker. b. 1747 , apprenticed 15 Sep 1764 to Mark Davis of Bristol, Merchant Venturer and Frances his wife for 7 years. Admitted a burgess of Bristol 16 Apr 1772. L isted with premises on College Green in 1785 and 1797, Park Street in 1792 and in Great Georges Street from 1795. Merchant in partnership with Robert Claxton from 1787. Bristol City Councillor 1777 -1803, Sheriff 1777 , declined the position of Mayor 1800. President of the Anchor Society in 1781. In 1794, with 4 partners, Philip Protheroe opened the Bristol City Bank, with premises in All Saints Passage. During the 1790s numerous ships were built for the Protheroes and employed in the trade to St Vincent, Nevis and Jamaica. They included the Britannia, Rachel, Hercules, Albion , Neptune and Thetis. Philip d. 30 Aug 1803 at Over Court and Philip's will left his son, Edward £200 00 plus real estate in the area of Bristol and a small property at Westbury-on-Trym. The Welsh property was divided between his younger sons Sir Henry, Philip and Lewis. He m. 2 Nov 1769 at Bristol, St James, Mary Brain, of St James, dau. of Moses Brain of Bristol. When making her will in 1818, she was described as late of Park Row, Bristol, but now of Burfield House, Westbury-on-Trym, Glos. d. 1 Dec 1818. Will dated 1 Dec 1818, proved 29 Nov 1819 by her son, Edward.
