We must now revert to the younger branch of the Walter family, commencing with William Walter, the son of John Walter by his wife Alson Mendus. See p. 272. This William Walter was an alderman of and resided in Haverfordwest. He was twice married. His first wife was Alice, the daughter of Hugh Barnard by Golley the daughter of ---- Lloyd of Llanrhystyd Cards.-Lewis Dwnn, Vol. I., p. 228. According to the Tucker MSS Goley was the daughter of leuan Lloyd ap Howell of Llanrhystyd. His second wife was also named Alice ; she was the daughter of Sir Thomas Middleton, knt., and was the widow of ---- Dolbyn, by whom she had a son named William Dolbyn.-Will of William Walter. William Walter was sheriff of Haverfordwest in 1578, and mayor of that town in 1581, 1592, and 1597. He died1 on............

1 The date of the death and age of William "Walter is recorded on a memorial stone on the south wall in the chancel of St. Mary's Church, Haverfordwest. This inscription was restored and repainted about the year 19:4. It appears that the mason employed unfortuna≠tely read the last figure of the date of the year as 4 instead of 1, and this error has been perpetuated in the History and Antiquities of Si. Mary's, Haverfordwest. There can be no question that 1611 is the correct date. Some 13 years ago the writer copied this inscription and then read it as 1611, and the author of the Althorpe Memoirs, which was published in 1869, and contains a note of the inscription, gives it as r6u. Moreover, the will of William Walter was proved on 4 July, 1611. On discovering the discrepancy between the date given in the History and Antiquities of St. Mary's, Haverfordwest, and that in his own copy, the writer re-visited the church, and on measuring the distance between the figures of the year, found that the space between the 4 and the preceding 1 was much narrower than the spaces between the other figures, whereas, if the long leg of the 4 be taken as 1, the four figures would be exactly equidistant from each other.

..........18 June, 1611, in the yoth year of his age. By his will, dated 18 May, 1611, and proved at Carmarthen on 4 July following, William Walter bequeathed to his wife Alice Middleton, in lieu of dower, 200 marks and all the plate she brought him, namely ' one bell saulte gilte, one silver tonn parcel gilte, one white silver wine cupp and 6 Appostle hedds' together with other household goods, and (if she released her interest in a lease of Heylott and Boyden, granted by Sir James Perrot, knt.) his live stock and an annuity of £6 133. 4d. The testator stated that he had been at great charges in maintaining his son Morgan Walter at the University of Oxford, but provided the latter released all claims to the capital mansion in which the testator resided, and to other property, he was bequeathed £200 to be paid by instalments of £20 per annum. According to Lewis Dwnn the children of Wil≠liam Walter were all by the first wife, and his will does not controvert this. They were:-
    1. Morgan Walter, who matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford, in May, 1596, aged 15, and was M.A. from All Souls College, Oxford, on 5 Mar., 1603. He was rector of Rudbaxton in 1606, of Newport in 1607, and at Llanddewi Velfrey in 1610, all in co. Pembroke.-Alumn. Oxon. He died without issue. -Paper of the Great Sessions for 1677-8.
    2. George Walter, who matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford, on 17 Mar., 1598, aged 16. This is given on the authority of Alumn. Oxon., but the writer of this article has found no other mention of his existence, so if that authority be correct, it is probable that this son died prior to the date of his father's will.
    3. Roger Walter, who matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford, in May, 1596, aged 13.-Alumn. Oxon.
