In 1836, when he was 9 years old, Jacob emigrated to America with his parents, landing first in New York City. From there they proceeded overland to the Haldimand County, ON area, settling in Rainham township near present day Fisherville, ON. In 1846 Jacob married Mary Kolar, daughter of James and Susanna Whiting. Mary was born on November 22, 1826, probably in Vermont where her parents were located before their move to Ontario. Jacob spent his younger years as a farmer and lumberman in Ontario before migrating to Michigan in 1860. On July 1, 1861 Jacob bought from the State of Michigan 320 acres of land in Argyle Township, Sanilac County, Michigan. He is recognized as the first permanent settler in Argyle township. This land was 4 miles from any travelled road so it was necessary that he cut a road through to his farm. He built a log cabin to provide shelter for his family, using the clearing from the trees to build a house, and to plant a garden and some grain for his livestock.
Jacob applied for American citizenship in December 1861, renouncing his loyalty to the Emperor of France who at that time was Napoleon II, nephew of Napoleon I. Declaration of Intent to become a Naturalized Citizen is dated December 20, 1861. (The spelling of the name on the document is Seter) Jacob held various local township offices and said his political leanings were Republican. Mary Kolar died on October 6, 1893 and is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Austin Township in Sanilac County, north of Argyle, MI. After her death, Jacob married Fredericka Lau of Greenwood Township, St Clair County, MI on April 5, 1894. He was 66 years old, she was 63. It is believed that Fredericka died shortly after their marriage and Jacob married again to Mary Crider Donaldson on March 6, 1900 at the age of 73. No record of Jacob's death has ever been found either in Sanilac County, nearby Huron County or Arenac County where some of the children moved.

Why did they move to Michigan ?.....a possible explanation.....

I'm not sure of the economic conditions in the 1860's and
1870's, but certainly many of the southern townships were
full by that time and it was difficult to purchase farms.
The townships bordering on Lakes Erie and Huron were settled
first. The 'inland' townships, especially those owned by
the Canada Company in North Middlesex and North Lambton were
settled in the 1830's through about 1860. After that time,
uncleared land was hard to find and children of the original
pioneers had to purchases farms as second or third owners.
I think there was some movement away from the area in the
1860's and 1870's, but the major outflow seems
to have started in the 1880's.
