Birth: 19 NOV 1810 in Orange Co., North Carolina 1

Note: 2 3 1 Per MBC, He came to Tennessee in 1836 from Orange Co., N. C. (See #10863 Col. Wm. Edwards' notes re further leads to pursue.) Per Clif (CBC,Jr.), family lore had Anderson traveling west w/ his parents who died in route. Wow, (?!) I had Never heard that story anywhere.--AGP. Per KCP, "Cousin Mattie Darnall said Anderson came from England when only 12 yoa, running away from step-mother." MBC routinely refers to her grandfather Anderson Cates as "John Anderson Cates" except in a place or two where she calls him "James" NOT "John." Curious, probably old age, hers.--AGP Ima Bawcum says Anderson left his mother (where?) when aged 10 & went to Louisiana, then some years later he made Mississippi & Tennessee his home, coming to Lake Co., Tennessee in 1836.
Note: 4 Served on first Lake Co. grand jury along with H.M. Darnall (dau-in-law's grandfather) & others.
Note: I have heard that Cates' Landing on the Mississippi River was the best such spot for many, many miles, less affected by weather or is it flood than much around it. Still, son Willis' big old farm house there had to be moved back from the encroaching river, and it was still in this new location when years later, unoccupied, it burned down. Signs of vagrants living there had been spotted from time to time. My grandmother had seen such on one visit from Memphis and speculated that one of their cook fires may have gotten out of hand starting the fire. The house stood across the road from the Is.No.10 monument. --AGP It was earlier seen wsuspected that vagrants squating there were cooking and it caught fire.
Note: Anderson's tombstone is broken and lying on the ground. An additional stone with his details would be a good idea. Locate sources.
