?The Earls of Wicklow bear the name of Howard, but they can not be traced back beyond the year 1636, when in John Howard married Dorothea...?
This ancient and honourable family is of Englifh extraction, and hath been long seated at Shelton in the
county of Wicklow; John Howard, Efq. in the year 1636, married Dorothea Hafels, and dying in England, where he had resided for some time previous to his decease, in 1643, left an only son Ralph, with whom his widow returned into Ireland in 1655, and was resident at Shelton, till 30 December 1 684 when fhe deceafed, and was interred in the parish church of Killbride, near Shelton.
?A scion of the great Enlgish House of Howard? (BP 1880)
John Howard, living temp Charles I, m 1636, Dorothea, dau and heir of Robert Hasells, and d 1643, aged 27, having [Difficult to read on my copy] by her (who removed into Ireland, m 2ndly her cousin ... Hasells [Difficult to read on my copy] first owner of Shelton, and d 30 Dec 1684, and was buried [?] at Kilbride, co Wicklow), a son Ralph.
One IGI submission (fiche no 471451) says that John was the son of Sir Charles Howard of Croglin Hall, Westmoreland, England (qv). Is it correct???
This would make him great grandson of the 4th Duke of Norfolk; if this was so, surely there would be reference somewhere to this eminent connection?
The Howard (Wicklow) arms included the English Howard arms, it seems.
Relative at marriage was William Howard (IGI) - was this his father?
One source says that his son Ralph (born 1638) bought Shelton in 1658. If that date is correct it would indicate that John was a man of some wealth which he left to his son, since it is hard to see how Ralph would have otherwise amassed enough funds by the age of 20.
It appears from a privately published book, entitled Memorials of the Howard Family, that Sir Charles Howard of Croglin Hall (1590 - 1665) was the 7th son of Lord William Howard. From this document it appears that he only had one daughter, Elizabeth. No other relevant info.
