Sir Robert Marmion, his son, succeeded having in his father?s lifetime married Matilda de Beauchamp, daughter of Sir William who had held Tamworth Castle in his grandfather?s days. By her he had a son, Robert (the elder). This Sir Robert was not only a valiant knight, but a renowned student of the law, and was made Justiciar in 1176. He joined the discontented barons against King John, who in 1215 (the year in which the Magna Carta was signed) sent his forces with authority to level the castle of Tamworth, but apparently with little effect.
By his second wife Philippa he had a second called Robert (the younger), who for a time held the castle of Tamworth. The Baron died in 1215 and was buried at Polesworth and was succeeded by his son.
