John Halle, a leading merchant importing fruit, fish, soap, and tar, was Mayor of Salisbury in 1450. He had light ship called the James of Poole, which captured at sea a ship from Brittany, which unfortunately for Hall, was carrying woollen cloths under safe conduct from Edward IV.
He was also imprisoned for his insolent behaviour before Henry VI and his council, when representing Salisbury in London.
Soon after his release was the trial of Sir Thomas Hungerford in Salisbury.
His hall house, built in 1470 is still extant in Salisbury, on New Canal St.
