Shortly after the Domesday Book the whole district of Kirby Knowle was granted to Robert de Mowbray, of whom it was held by subinfeudation by Baldwin le Wake, afterwards by Hugh de Upsall, and then by the family of Lascelles, by one of whom, Sir Roger de Lascelles, who died A.D. 1297, a castle was erected here, called Kirby Knowle Castle.
This Roger left four daughters, co-heiresses.
