Little is known of the Heage Hall estate in medieval times. It was probably in the hands of one of the foresters or lesser rank of Duffield Frith. However, at the beginning of the 15th Century it was in the hands of the Dethicks and it took a separate existence at this time, when Sir Robert Dethick of Dethick and his only son, Thomas, were both killed at the Battle of Shrewsbury. The Dethick estate passed to Thomas Babington, husband of Sir Robert's elder daughter, and Highedge (Heage) passed to Henry Pole married to the younger daughter, Alice.
Henry, was a cadet of the Poles of Newborough, Hartington and Radbourne, and was a steward of Darley Abbey where he was buried with his wife.
