Name: William de Whittington
Occupation: Father of Dick Whittington
Change Date: 12 JAN 2008
Sir William Whittington Lord of Pauntley and Solers Hope, County Hereford. Married Joan, daughter of William Mansell, High Sheriff of Gloucester.
Their children were Sir Richard, William, and Robert. Sir Richard was citizen, Mercer, Alderman and Lord of Mayor of London in 1393-1406-1417. Sir Richard was famous for his establishment of churches and libraries and especially for his prison reforms.
In 1352 William had married Joan, the daughter of William Mansell, Sheriff of Gloucestershire, and widow of Sir Thomas (de) Berkeley, of Coberley, but and whilst Richard was still a child, his father was outlawed for marrying without licence. It would have required a crippling fine to redeem his outlawry, and at the time selling of rich widows was a lucrative branch of commerce. He died, still an outlaw in 1362, and when his widow died, the estate which she'd inherited went to the second son.
