John Lucas's marriages, first to Mary Abel and then Elizabeth, dau of John Christmas of Colchester, joined him to two of the town's wealthiest families of cloth merchants, bringing him rich dowries and securing his dynastic succession with three sons in addition to several daughters.
In 1542, on Thomas Culpepper's attainder, his estates at Fordham were given to Sir Anthony Wingfield, who the same year sold them, divided into two portions: John Lucas acquired Fordham Hall and Archentines; the other part, Great Fordham manor with the Frith estate, was assigned to John Abell [Presumably Mary?s brother].
