Sir Robert Marmion.  In his days Henry I was again in the midlands and probably at Tamworth.  At Cannock he made a grant to Sir Robert of free warren in all his lands in Warwickshire.  About 1139 Sir Robert reinstated the nuns of Polesworth in their old home whence they had been expelled by one of his predecessors.  This Robert was a strenuous supporter of Stephen against the Empress Maud, who in a moment of victory in 1141 confiscated his castle and bestowed it upon Sir William de Beauchamp.  In 1144 Sir Robert engaged in serious strife with Randolph, Earl of Chester and attacked him at Coventry, and there was ignominiously slane.  His remains were conveyed to Polesworth and there ultimately interred, but a portion was afterwards removed for sepulture in the Abbey of Barbery which he had founded.
