About 1552 Killyleagh Castle was in the possession of the Whyte family. Mr Whyte was said to have had 120 footmen & 20 horses but was too weak to defend the castle against General Monk whose troops bombarded the castle and partially destroyed it.
In 1606 it was in the possession of James Hamilton (Lord Viscount Claneboye) [Gawen?s uncle] who added a tower and made more repairs.
Had a son Archibald Hamilton of Killyleagh, who m Mary Johnstone.
?Captain Gawen Hamilton died the 27th of Oct, 1703, aged 73 or thereabouts.?
Since Gawen inherited the Castle from [his uncle] the impotent second earl of Clanbrassil, the eldest sons of the family were called alternately Gawen William and Archibald James.
Captain Gawin Hamilton, fourth* son of Archibald Hamilton, was a party to the partition agreement of 1696, being styled of Liswine, and becoming, with his brother William, owners of the castle portion of Killileagh. He died 1703, aged 73 or thereabouts. He married his cousin Jane, daughter of Archibald Hamilton, minister of Armagh, in 1683.
