Note: 3 Ayshford in Burlescombe parish in Halberton hundred (EPNS, p547). It appears in DB as Aisseford, held by Walter the Steward from Walter de Claville (DB 24,13). In the reign of Henry II it was held by Stephen de Ayshford from the Claville family. In 1242 Agnes de Ashford or Ayshford, widow of John, held a third of a fee here of the honor of Gloucester (Fees, p780). In 1399 Sir William Asthorpe died in possession of the manor, which he presumably held from the Ayshford family, for the manor remained in their hands until the heiress of John Ayshford (d1688) brought it to the Sandford family (OJR, Supp pp58-59; Lysons, p91). In 1822 the manor was the property of William Ayshford Sandford Esq of Minehead in Somerset (Lysons, p91). In 1850 it was owned by Edward Ayshford Sandford (White). The manor house still stands (Pevsner, p146).
