In 1276, in the reign of Edward I., the manor of Hartwell was held by Alice de Laton [sic] and William, her son, to whom it had been conveyed in 1269, at the end of the reign of Henry III., by William de Hartwell, and it has remained, without interruption, in the direct line of the Latons ever since. Sir Henry de Laton, the last male of this family, was Knight of the Shire for the county of Bucks in 1387 and 1390 His only child, Eleanor, married Thomas de Stoke, and her only child, Agnes, wife of Sir Thomas Singleton, had a daughter and heiress, Elizabeth.
