    4th but 2nd surviving son.
John Rolle, grandson of George Rolle who married the heiress of Marrais, was afterwards K. B., and many years one of the representatives for this county: he married one of the co-heiresses of his relation, Dennis Rolle, Esq. of Bicton, and at the time of his death, in 1706, was possessed of upwards of forty manors in Devonshire, besides large estates in Cornwall, Somersetshire, and Northamptonshire.
Sir John Rolle, K.B., was a zealous friend of Charles II., and made him large remittances during his exile. He was created K.B. at the Restoration.
He bought Stevenstone in 1524 and represented Barnstaple.
The younger son of an obscure Cornish branch, inherited the bulk of the family property through a series of deaths without male issue in the 1640s. A working farmer in his younger days, he was mowing hay when news was brought to him of his succession to the Stevenstone estate. He wasted no time before consolidating his position financially by marrying his cousin.
