In 1534 the city was thrown into a consternation, which Fitz-Gerald laying hold of; demanded liberty to march his army through it, and lay siege to the castle, promising that no citizen should be injured in his property by his soldiers. The citizens took time to advise on this matter before they gave their consent; and immediately dispatched one of their aldermen, Francis Herbert, to the king to know his pleasure, who, for his discreet demeanor upon the occasion, received the honour of knighthood, and was made a member of the privy-council.
A Francis Herbert was a Baillif of Dublin in 1528.
By an unedited letter, dated 24th January, 1538, from (Sir) Francis Herbert to the Duke of Norfolk, we learn that " the last hosting made by the Lord Deputy had punished 0?Conor sorely?
