Father of Robert Reid (d1558), Bishop Orkney 1541-58, Abbot of Kinloss 1526-53, who was uncle of Walter Reid.
His daughter Alison (b 1507?) married Edward Bruce of Blairhall (1505-65) and was great grandmother of the 3rd Earl of Devonshire, who was father of the 1st Duke of Devonshire.
?On 30 October 1554 Robert (Reid), Bishop of Orkney, and his nephew Walter Reid, the lately elected Abbot of Kinloss, appointed the [Grant] Laird of Freuchie as successor to his father in the office of Bailie of the Abbey of Kinloss.?Does this mean that the Grant or Reid father had been Baillie of the Abbey?
A John Reid of Aikenhead married Katherine, dau of Thomas Dumbreck of that Ilk (1525-47) and Marjorie Forbes. If Robert Reid, son of John Reid of Aikenhead, was made Abbot of Kinloss in 1526, then Thomas Dumbreck (b 1525) could not be his grandfather, and the John who married Katherine Dumbreck is perhaps his brother (and perhaps father of Walter?)
Thomas Dumbreck of Dumbreck (of that ilk) 1525-1547 is mentioned in a confirmation charter of date 14 February 1564. He was then dead, and had left two daughters, his co-heiresses. The King confirmed a charter made by Margaret Dumbreck, one of the daughters and heir of the late Thomas Dumbreck of the same, in which after she had reached twenty-one years, and for a sum of money paid to herself, she sold to John Reid of Akinfield, her brother-in-law, and Katherine Dumbreck, his spouse, the half of the lands of Dumbreck with annexes. The date is February 14, 1568. (Id,. Nos. 1480, 1546)."
From the Reids, the lands of Dumbreck passes away out of the family, and comes into a branch of the family of Meldrum of Fyvie.
The IGI (Submitted) has a Robert Reid b abt 1512, Aikenhead, Orkney, son of William Reid. If Robert Reid was made Abbottt of Kinloss in 1526 then this would be too late to be him.
