In 1279 a final concord between William of Sadberge and Robert de Hoton was issued concerning two parts of the manor of Butterwick (Durham County Record D/Sa/D 219) and an undated charter, probably of the same year, by William of Sadberge granted the village of Butterwick to Robert, son of Richard de Hoton, William's nephew.
In bishop Bury's time, John de Hoton died seised of the manor ; and the rent stated is only ten marks.f The family soon after took the name of Butterwick ...
