Burkes Commoners reports that Bishop Percy reports that the following Nicholas was the same person as the Nicholas shown above as younger brother of Sir Walter Hopton (son of Sir Walter Hopton and Joan, dau of Robert Loughbrughe or Longbrughe), but Commoners also reports that Gough shows Nicholas as son of William son of Richard, which is as given by Visitation (Shropshire) and, as inserts from Blakeway's 'Shropshire Pedigrees', by Visitation (Herefordshire). We provisionally follow the Visitations.

Name given as William in Pedigree Resource?
Following Richard III?s defeat in 1485, Walter Hopton?s [see his father Thomas in this file, and sister and heiress Elizabeth] lands were attainted and Hopton Castle and all its lands passed to the crown and Henry VII. From being lords of the manor and major landowners the Hoptons became tenant farmers paying tithes and taxes to the crown. The castle itself passed to the Wallop family.
The Hoptons were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated with manors & estates in Hopton of Shropshire. The junior line of Sir William of Hopton, [this?] Nicholas was descended through Sir Walter, Sir Henry, Sir Peter, Sir Walter, Sir John, in continous descendancy to William Hopton of Hopton about 1600. Sir Richard Hopton was High Sherrif of Herefordshire. Richard, his descendant was High Sheriff of Hereford in 1787. Most prominent at this time was Lord Hopton of Stratton.
