Left three sons and four daughters.
Died age 48.
[In Sandford Orcas Church] A strange wall monument of carved and painted alabaster shows a knight in armour, kneeling between his two wives and eleven children. Seven children kneel in black gowns and the others are in swaddling clothes of red and lying in a heap behind their mother. The knight, who rests below the memorial is William Knoyle who died a few years before Shakespeare.
The reading on the stone gives us more information on this strange tomb, dated 1607. It seems he married 'fillip, daughter of Robert Morgane by whom hee had yssve 4 children and bee dead'.
The knight's second wife was Grace Clavel, by whom he had three sons and four daughters, who survived him.
A previous wife, was also entitled to her place in the family. When William Knoyle?s widow, Grace, commissioned his tomb in 1607 at Sandford Orcas in Dorset, she evidently thought it appropriate to include her predecessor, Fillip, along with her four dead babies. Fillip has her own panel, but she is the same size ? and as dignified ? as Grace, though she wears the headdress of an earlier date.
His wife Felip was dau of Robert Morgan of Maperton, who must haev been the one who was son of John Morgan d 1535, qv.
