In the reign of King John, there was an Hermitage in the wood at Helaugh, which afterwards, in 1218, became a convent of regular black canons, established and endowed by Jordan de St. Maria, and Alice, his wife.

Dodsworth read much concerning this family de Sancta Maria in the coucher of Welbeck ; but he found nothing earlier than Paganus.
He found the names of three sons of Paganus, Adam, Jordan, and Nicholas, which Nicholas was illegitimate.' Jordan was a benefactor at Wombwell to the priory of Helaugh. He left only coheirs, one of whom married Henry Walleis, lord of Burgh Walleis; and the other, sir Robert de Cokefield, by whom she had a daughter and heir married to John Le Vavasor.

Ralph de Annesley married...Lucia, eldest of the three daughters and coheirs of Adam de Sancta-Maria (son of Paganus, Lord of Roumarsh in Yorkshire, and of Bulcotes and Knyveton in Nottinghamshire) by Albreda, his second wife, daughter of Jordan de Chevercourt and widow of Robert de St. Quintin.
