The only certainty about the origin of Louis, Comte de Mousson by right of his wife and ancestor of the families of the Comtes de Bar and Montbéliard, is the name of his mother who is referred to in a charter of his daughter Mathilde. At least three different theories have been proposed concerning the identity of his father:
* Jackman suggests that LOUIS was the son of OTTO Graf im Sundgau, son of LIUTOLD [Konradiner] & his wife Willibirg, but does not appear to cite his authorities other than referring to speculation concerning the descent of the castle of Montbéliard through this line.
* Poull suggests that LOUIS was the son of comte LOUIS, who fell ill returning from a pilgrimage to Mont-Saint-Michel between 1016 and 1025, and stopped at Sens where he became a monk at the abbey of Saint-Pierre to which he gave a pallium and his villa "Aricurt/Hericurt". He also refers to Otto Graf im Sundgau as a possible ancestor, but the chronology is inconsistent with another generation inserted between Graf Otto and Louis de Mousson.
* Europäische Stammtafeln suggests that LOUIS was the son of RICUIN [Richwin] Comte dans le Scarponnois. Although many authorities are cited for the relevant table, it is not clear which one is the basis for this proposed affiliation.
