    Gavin Hamilton, b abt 1580, Kype, Lanarkshire, Scotland m Abigail Hamilton in 1611. Gavin's g grandson John, b- 1708 moved to Mauchline, Ayrshire.
    According to the "House of Hamilton", P. 548, John Hamilton, with his father (Gavin) was mentioned in the records in 1648. (V. Lanark Sasines Nether-ward, p. 99). On 6 July 1649, he is referred to as John Hamilton, son of Gavin Hamilton of Kyp. (V. Lanark Sasines Nether-ward, p. 112.) On 18 January 1650 he is called John Hamilton of West Kype. (Ibid.) In 1683 he refused the Test and was apparently alive at the time of his daughter's wedding in 1688. (VIII, Ser III, Privy Council Register, p. 652.)
    John married Jean Cleland, no doubt soon after 8 November 1648, when she is called "his future wife." She died February 1657, confirmation of her Testament granted to her husband 9 April 1669. (Commisariat Records of Glasgow)
