Lunenburg County was formed in 1746 from Bruswick County.
John Echols was born in 1650 in England. He moved to VA where he married Mary Cave (daughter of John Cave and Elizabeth Travers) in 1688 in Caroline, VA. John and Mary had the following children: Richard, Mary Eleanor, Joseph, Elizabeth, Anne, William, John, Abraham, Moses and Richard. John died in Lunenburg in 1712. Mary died in 1761 having lived to the age of 91.

The author is an eighty-one-year-old semiretired surgeon who still has an active office practice. Married to Ruth Seaman, the couple have three sons with several grandchildren. His interests include astronomy and music. He has written several articles that have been published in the surgical literature. He has built his own observatory and telescope and written music and lyrics for relaxation. He is listed in the National Registry of Who?s Who.

Text: CAVE; Mary Cave (1665-1761) married John Echols (1650-1712). Their daughter Eleanor Mary Echols married Nicholas Gillintine. Their daughter, Ann Gillintine, married Matthew Hillsman. Mary Cave's parents were John Cave (1637-1721) and Elizabeth Travers (1650-1694). This line passes to the Lonas family, and thence to the Helms family by way of Margaret Lonas, the granddaughter of Mathew Hillsman.
