    Perry, Bentley: Robert Hughett died at his home one-half mile south of Bentley, April 29, aged 75 years. He was born in Virginia and was married in 1844 to Levina Wilson. Of their ten children three survived: Gordon of Oregon, John of Keokuk, and Joshua of Bentley. Mrs. Hughett died March 3, 1861 and in Feb. 1862 he was married to Miss Martha Oley. Their two children were, Luella, wife of Walter Merrick, of Bentley, and Lizzie, wife of Robert Jones of Oklahoma. Funeral services were held at the Primitive Baptist church, Elder Louis Frazee officiating. Interment in Harmony cemetery.

    Excerpt from "My Ancestors," by Zula M. Hardy, published in the Carthage (IL) Republican: "Robert Hughett my great-grandfather married Luvina Wilson. In 1849 they and their children Gordon and Delilah accompanied by Mastin Wilson my great-grandmother's brother came to Illinois in a covered wagon. They first settled in St. Mary's township but later moved to a farm southeast of Bently, Illinois. Here three children were born John, Joshua and his twin brother, the twin lived only a few days. His grave was the first grave in Harmony Township."

  • Note: This church was organized at the Bentley schoolhouse 16 Apr 1870. The nine charter members were: J. M. Slusher, Robert Hughett, Wilson Thompson, Pleasant Cox, Susanna Burnett, Martha Ann Hughett, Lucinda Thompson, Mary Slusher, & Eliza Jane Grove. In June they elected Elder Thomas Jones as their pastor. In July of that same year Smyrna Church moved to offer herself to Salem Association for membership and appointed as her first messengers Robert Hughett, Pleasant Cox, and J.M. Slusher. In 1872, Robert Hughet was appointed a trustee.
