    Will of John Chowning
    Robertson County Tennessee Will Book of 1829 page 386.
    In the name of God amen;
    I, John Chowning, Senior of Robertson County and the state of Ten nessee being in good health and sound mind and memory and knowing the c ertainty of death and the uncertainty of life and calling to mind that i t is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last w ill and testament in manner and form following.
    First, I recommend my soul to Almighty God that gave it and my bod y to the dust to be buried in a Christian like manner and as to my worl dly goods which it hath been pleased God to bless me with in this life I d ispose of in the following manner , I will that all my just debts be fi rst paid.
    Item; I give to my son Richard Chowning on hundred and sixty three a nd one fourth acres of land beginning at my beginning corner on a Hicko ry, thence east to the corner four post Oak painter, thence south,thenc e west for complement, also I give him one Negro man by the name of Wil l, also I give him my waggon and gurr (gear?) with all my plantation (e ssentials) of any description, also I give him one rifle gun and one sh ot gun and shot pouch and one work steer.
    Item; I give to my son John Chowning one hundred and sixty three A nd one fourth acres of land, beginning at my son Richard's south corner t hence south, thence west for compliment, I also give my son John Chown ing one beef the value of one Negro man by the name of Absalom.
    Item; I give to my son Robert Chowning one hundred and sixty three a nd one fourth acres of land, beginning at my son Johns south corner and r unning thence south thence west for compliment, also I give my son Robe rt one half of the value of one Negro named Absalom.
    Item; I give to my son in law Edward Choate one dollar in lawful m oney of this state.
    Item; I give to my grand daughter Milly Miles the first choice of a ll the horse beasts I have at my death. Also one Negro woman's saddle w orth eighteen dollars. The balance of my estate not mentioned already, I will to be equally divided between my children as hereafter to be nam ed.
    Item; I give to my daughter Jain Payne one fourth part, Letticia H ightower one fourth part, Sally Holeman one fourth part.
    Item; I give to my grand children, the children of my daughter Be tsey Choate deceased, one fourth part to them and their heirs forever.
    Lastly; I do appoint my two sons Robert Chowning and Richard Chown ing executors to this my last will and testament and I do hereby disann ul and revoke all other wills or instruments of writing whatever,wherei n it I have set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty third day of Ap ril one thousand eight hundred and twenty nine.

    Robertson County Court February Term 1831. This last will and test ament of John Chowning, deceased was proven in open Court by the oath o f Martin Waltin, Winifred Waltin and Elizabeth Waltin subscribing witne sses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
