Family Lore says 3 brothers moved from Canada and settled in Cherry Valley. One is located in New York, and the other is a part of an area outside of Worcester, MA.
From Helen Everett, Oct 18, 1969: My Father ( Ernest Campbell ) said our branch of the Campbells came from three men, brothers, who came over here in 1643. Two settled in Cherry Valley, NY, and the third in Providence. They were connected with the Duke of Argyll (sic).Page: Helen Everett, Oct 18, 1969:

  • Military:
Under the Federal Militia Act of 1792 and State act of 1793 all males 18-45
were required to serve in the militia. Phineas enrolled at age 18, he
probably a SGT by 1824 then

    Appointed Ensign, 13 June 1825
Promoted to LT 14 May 1827
Promoted to CPT 14 June 1828 and commander Lunenburg company of infantry, 4th
Regt, 2d Brigade, 6th Division, Massachusetts Militia
Discharged 9 Mar 1829 due to health and family reasons

His real reason was that he served the minimum service as an officer and
    could resign

Lunenburg had two enrolled infantry companies and one light infantry company
up to 1822 when one enrolled company was disbanded
The light inf company was disbanded in 1831 probably because it could not
    keep up its strength
The last company was disbanded in 1840

There are no existent records for the unit that Campbell commanded that I
know of; units were not required to have "permanent" records.

    Campbell's lts were:

    LT Thomas Lane
    LT Samuel Hilton Jr

As I mentioned, the militia met once a year for training on the town green.
After the War of 1812 there was no threat and interest in the militia waned.
