JOSIAH PAINE'S HARWICH FAMILIES
BURTON N. DERICK
[The originals of these papers are in NEHGS Library in Boston. This is in a massive ledger, all handwritten with many side notes, marginal notes and insertions. These transcriptions are from photocopies of the original ledger.
Josiah Paine started collecting records in 1845, and, through his son John H. Paine, was continuing to collect information up to about 1920. The Paines were interested in the history of and individuals inhabiting the town of Harwich from the earliest times, and collected their data based on official records, as well as obscure records not now extant, and with interviews with the town's oldest citizens of the day.
Two prominent families of the Town of Harwich are not represented well in this ledger. Mr. Paine kept separate ledgers and records on the Nickerson and Paine families. Transcription of those records must wait until another time.
In the transcription which follows, the page numbers refer to the page number of the ledger. The transcription is verbatim, with Mr. Paine's spelling and punctuation. Items in square brackets [ ] are comments by the transcriber. Items in parentheses ( ) are interlined comments by Mr. Paine, and items in curled brackets are marginal and/or foot notes by Mr. Paine. Transcriber notes are in Arial font, and all entries are in Times New Roman font.]
