    As one of an army of about 90 men raised from Hartford, Windsor and Wethersfield, he served a s an ensign in the Pequot Indian war of May, 1637...Thomas Bunce was granted 60 acres in 167 1 and an additional 50 acres in 1672 by the General Court "for his Good service therein." Hi s land was located near the present site of the state Capitol. He and his wife, Sarah, were e arly members of the First Church of Hartford, but separated from it, and had joined the Secon d or South Church by 1670.

A Home Lott & dwelling house, 100; to 9 Acres of meadow Land at the pond, 70; to La nd at the wherle pool, 9; to Land in the wett swamp, 6; to 30 acres of Land in the wett swa mp, 30; to a Long Lott in the west feild, 22 1/2 acres, 30; to 6 Acres dry swamp, 12; sume ,

I Thomas Bunce do give and confirme to Joh n Bunce my sonn & his heirs forever all that my house & Lott & barn with all the apurtenance s belonging to it (which I bought of Thomas Gridley) within th eBounds of the Township of Har tford, & my 40 acre Lott which I bought of the aforesayd Gridley which Lyeth near weathersfie ld Bound, together with my whole right, title & Interest in the saw Mill that was built by Mr . Gardner, Stephen Hosmer, and my selfe, & doe put him in present possession thereof. Moreove r I doe give & bequeath unto my sayd sonn John Bunce six acres of Meadow Land in the South me adow on the south side of my Lott Lying by John Watson's, Thomas Catlin's and Steven Hopkins ' Land, as also I give & bequeath to him my Lott Lyeing over against Mr. Webster, which abutt s on the Highway east & on John Watsons Land on the West & on John Richards' Land on the sout h & on the highway on the North. These two Last parcells of my Land my sayd sonn John Bunce i s to possess immediately after the decease of me & my wife Sarah Bunce. Moreove I doe give un to my sayd (sonn) John Bunce out of my moveable estate 10. I doe give unto my daughter Eliza beth White 20. I doe give unto all my grand children to each of them 5. I doe give to my co usin Elizabeth White, 5. I doe give to my sister Katharen Clark 10. I doe give to my wife a ll my moveable estate, both of Cattell & household stuffe, to be to he use & behoofe whilst s he shall Live & to dispose of at her decease to our children. I doe give unto her the use an d improvement of all my houseing & Land that I stand possessed of at my decease, to be for he r comfortable subsisttance, she keeping houseing & fences in good repayre; provided, if she m arry again she shall have but one halfe of my houseing & Lands. I doe give unto my son Thoma s Bunce Jr. & his heirs forever, after the decease of my wife, all my houseing & Lands of wha t nature & kind soever ther be, or wheresoever situated. I doe nominate my sayd sonn Thomas B unce to be my whole & sole Executor; & to enable him to performe this my Will & to pay such L egacies as I have herein given, I do grant him power to sell any part of my Land at Wethersfi eld for the end aforesayd, not with standing any clause or bequest in this my will to the con trary; & that he may have a refuge to repare unto for advice & councill in all difficulties t hat may arise in the attendency of this my will, I doe desiree my Brethren Ens. Nath. Standl y & Steven Hosmore to be my desired overseers to assist him with council & advice as there sh all be need.

    A nuncupative Codicil appears upon record, entered upon the testimony of Thomas Bull and Jona than Bull upon oath before John Allyn, Assits. 2 August 1683, wherein he revokes the Legacy t o his cousin Elizabeth White, giveing her nothing, and reduceing the Legacies to his Grand ch ildrenn from 5 to each to 20 shillings to each.

    From "A Catalogue of the Names of the First Puritan Settlers of the Colony of Connecticut.":
    Bunce, Thomas, of Hartford--wife, Sarah--died in 1683. Children, John, Elizabeth White, Thoma s, jr. Estate 1024:3. He gave his son John his house, barn and home lot in Hartford, which h e purchased of Thomas Gridley, and 40 acres near Wethersfield line, also his right in a saw-m ill built by Mr. Gardner, Stephen Hosmer and himself; also, 16 acres in the south meadow; als o, a lot near Mr. Websters. To Elizabeth he gave 20. He left a legacy to each of his grand c hildren; also, to his cousin, Elizabeth White ; to his sister, Katherine Clark, 10; he als o provided liberally for his wife, Sarah. To his son, Thomas, jr., he gave, after the death o f his wife, all his housing and lands, not disposed of before, and made his son Thomas, execu tor of his will. (See p. 16.)
