    Johann Casper Schmick came over from Rotterdam on the ship "Ranier," arriving on 26 Sep 1749 . Also on the ship were Georg Schmick and Fred Wm. Geist, probable ancestor of Maria Geist wh o married Casper Smick.

    Maxtawney Volunteers: In the spring of 1756, a company of volunteers was formed by the fronti er inhabitants of Berks and Northhampton Counties, PA, and contributions of money for the sol diers were made by the settlers more safely located. It was called the "Maxetani and Allemang le Freyen Wacht Companie" (Independent Guard). It consisted of 24 men who served 39 days fro m 3 Apr 1756 to 11 May 1756. Caspar Schmick was Sergeant under Captain Johannes Hergerdeder , along with 22 Privates. The Captain was paid 5 shillings per day, the Sergeant 2 shilling s 6 pence, and the Privates 16 pence. Six pence a day was allowed for rations and a gill of r um costing 8 pence per quart was served daily to each man. ["The Pennsylvania Genealogical Ma gazine," Vol. VIII, page 201.]

    In 1790 Casper Smeck lived in Maxatany Township, Berks Co., PA (page 37) (22400) with a wife , 1 son 16+, 2 sons 0-15, and 3 daughters. He lived next to Phil Smeck (20300).

    Caspar died at age 92 and was buried in the Cemetery of Christ, De Long's Reformed Church, Bo wers, Berks Co., PA. Buried with Casper and his wife Magdalena (age 69y 3m 11d) was Judith Sc hmick, born 27 Jan 1797 and died 12 Nov 1823 (age 26y 9m 15d). [Gravestones listed in "The Pe nnsylvania Genealogical Magazine," Vol. III, page 225 and Vol. IX, page 77.]

    Caspar's gravestone records he had 8 sons and 4 daughters. The orphan's report lists at the d eath of John Caspar in 1850 lists his sibilings: Brothers are 1. Godhart Schmick, 2. Peter Sc hmick, 3. Christian Schmick, 4. Godfrey Schmick, 5. Philip Schmick, 6.Gottlieb Schmick, Siste rs are 1. Catherine Schmick Fister, 2. Margaret Schmick Fister, 3. Elizabeth Schmick, 4. Phoe be Schmick. Solomon is listed as the 8th son, perhaps dying as an infant. His grave is decora ted with a flag commemorating his military service.
