William Hammond wrote his will on 14 Sept 1794 (E.B. #17), and it was probated 18 Aug 1795 i n Somerset Co., MD. It named wife Ann, daughters Nancy Miles, Betsy Lankford, Salley Hammond , son Jonathan and brother Wilson Hammond. The text follows:
"In the Name of God Amen I William Hammond of Somerset County in the State of Maryland bein g very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory and understanding and considerin g the certainty of Death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being disposed to settl e my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this World when it shall ple ase God to call me hence I do therefore make and publish this may last Will and Testament i n manner and form following that is to say first and principally I commit my soul into the ha nds of Almighty God and Body to the Earth to be decently Buried at the discrecion of my Execu tor hereafter named after my debts and funeral charges are paid. I devis and bequeath as foll ows - Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Ann Hammond one Cow and one Yearling on e Bed and Furniture belonging to it Six old chairs two Chests with some sundrys in them whic h house hold goods my wife Ann brought with her also I give unto Ann Hammond my wife one mar e bridle and saddle. I have given Ann Hammond my wife nothing of my Estate but what was her o wn property before I Maryed her except one mare Bridle and Saddle. Item I give and bequeath u nto my Daughter Nancy Miles one Spinning Wheal. Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Bet sy Lankford on Cow call Blossom and calf belong to her one yew one Woolling wheal. Item I giv e and bequeath unto my Daughter Salley Hammond one Bed and furniture. Item I give and bequeat h unto my son Jonathan Hammond all the remainder part of my Estate my house hold good my Catt le my Horses and all my Stock of every kind that I have not before giving away also I will th at my son Jonathan Hammond shal raise money out of the house hold goods or Stock or Crop whic h I have Willed to him or any other ways to pay my debts and Funeral Charges. Lastly I do her eby constitute and appoint my Brother Wilson Hammond and my Son Jonathan Hammond to by my ___ _ and soul Executor of this my last Will and Testament revolking and annuling all former Will s by me heretofore made by me ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will a nd Testament whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this fourteenth day of September N o Doni one Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety four Signed Sealed published & declared by Willi am Hammond as his last Will And Testament in the presents of us the Subscribers: Joseph Tilgh man, Joseph Anno (x his mark), Neal Coxbird, William Colbard. -----William Hammond (+ his mar k)."
