Letter written by Tisdale from Durhamville, NY on 2-12-1862
I've your letter of last week & in answer I would say: my health is some better. I have to co ugh much yet & am not able to do anything of the work kind. As to our business matters: I wis h to do right. If I do not have a will, all will come in for an equal share, now John has ha d two hundred & twenty dollars in money & he gave his notes for $39 to his hands on the boa t & sign my name to them. I told them to go to New York and put an attachment on the boat. Th ey did so and had to pay $51. I scolded him on that and he replied he had a right so to do: w hen Harry came home he said let him go, so I withdrew: there remains a claim against me of pr obably $130 on that boat which will have to be paid or have a lawsuit. So you see John has ha d more than $360 and now George Low offers to take the property and pay the debts and maintai n me and pay the funeral charges and fulfill a will in the following order:
to you we send $25 sometime in the ensuing summer that is to pay your expense down here las t fall. Then $200 after my decease and $200 to Justin V., $100 to Desdimona A. and $100 to Ha rriet, $100 to each of Charle's children and $300 to Edwin and to Harry $600 and as much mor e as he can afford after setting the debts. Elizabeth C. is to have all the household furnitu re. This is about as I have made up my mind to do. Now if you can get up a will that will b e any more just or equal please write soon. If you are satisfied and think that is about righ t send them. Note is and we will send the $25 as soon as convenient. If I have wirtten so yo u can read and understand my meaning. You think it proper for you to come down here, you ha d better come soon for life is very uncertain at best. Old Mr. Frazee was buried last week an d George Williams last week and John Newcomb is but just alive, and now because my letter I a m tired and have the headache and I have had more of the complaint in three weeks than I eve r had in all my life and now may your conduct for the remaining part of your life be [?] you r conscience shall approve and merit the approbation of Heaven. This is the best wish of you r friend & Father.
