Matthew Cummings served in the Revolutionary War. He claimed to have enlisted first in PA i n Capt. William Cowan's Company, Col. Thomas Clark's Regiment. He then claimed to have been t ransferred in 1777 to Capt. Thomas Askin's Company, Col. James Dunlap's Regiment, which wer e from the Cumberland Valley, PA. His PA records have not been located.
Matthew enlisted as a Private in VA in 1776 and again in July 1780, at which time his famil y lived in Charlotte Co., VA. In Sept 1781 he was wounded in the battle of Eutaw Springs whe n his collarbone was broken by a musket ball. He was taken captive by the British and was det ained on the prison ship "Esk" at Charleston Harbor. On 4 Mar 1782: "Joshus Morris is appoint ed to furnish Elizabeth Cummings, the wife of Matthew Cummings, a poor soldier, belonging t o the Continental Army, and now a prisoner of the British in Charles Town, with four bushel s of corn and one hundred weight of bacon for the support of herself and three children for o ne year, to be paid for by the Treasurer of the State." [Virginia Military Records, Charlott e Co. Records, Page 125] Matthew was released in Nov 1782.
Under warrent #6,480 Matthew Cummings was issued Military Land Script for 200 acres as a sold ier of the Virginia Continental Line. The script was assigned and delivered through Allen Lat ham. [Virginia General Land Office Records, 15 Nov 1834] Note: Matthew probably took possessi on of 200 in Lincoln Co., KY (formed from Kentucky Co., VA in 1780), the area were he lived b ecoming Lincoln Co., KY in 1786 and then Anderson Co., KY in 1827. He appears in a Lincoln Co . record in 1786.
Under the Pensions Act of 18 Mar 1818, Private Matthew Cummings, of the VA Line, resident o f Franklin Co., KY, applied for a pension. His pension commenced on 13 Nov 1818, and he was p laced on the roll on 3 Feb 1819 with an annual award of $96.00. His age at that time was 84(? ). He received a total of $1,020.19. He was dropped from the roll on 10 Mar 1821, restored t o the roll on 1 Mar 1823, and reinstated 11 Nov 1823. He relinquished for an increase of hi s stipend under the Act of 7 June 1832. Matthew was a weaver by trade. The only mention of a wife is the Elizabeth with three childre n mention when he was a prisoner of war. He may have been married two or more times as he i s known to have had 11 sons and 7 daughters. He had six or seven sons in the War of 1812, al l of whom escaped being wounded.
In 1800 Matthew Cummins Sr. lived in the 1800 Mercer Co., KY. In 1810 Matthew Commins lived i n Franklin Co., KY (page 118) (12201-11101-00) with a wife, 5 sons and 3 daughters; his son M atthew Commins Jr. lived nearby with his new wife. In 1820 he lived in Franklin Co. (page 130 ) (012010-01001) with his wife, 3 sons and 1 daughter; his son Matthew Jr. lived next door.
A possible son: Joseph Cummins married Nancy Hancock in 1793 in Mercer Co., KY. Matthew was r eported to have 11 sons and 7 daughters, no doubt by several wives, or misreported.
