    Morris served in Captain Perkin's Virginia Militia Company during the war of 1812. He was lev ied for 2 tithes on 2 slaves and 12 horses in one 1813 Grayson County, Virginia tax roll. I n 1815 Morris Baker owned 150 acres at Grassy Creek, Ashe Co., NC. In 1830 Morris lived in As he Co., NC with a wife, 5 sons, and 2 daughters. He sold his property in 1834.

    This Indenture made this __ day of October AD 1834 by Morris Baker of the State of North Caro lina and the county of Ashe of one part and Elisha Anderson of the state of Virginia and coun ty of Grayson of the other part. Wittnesseth that the said M. Baker for the consideration o f the sum of M 75 to him in hand paid by E. Anderson the receipt of the said M. Baker doth ac knowledge. A certain tract or parcel of land containing 100 acres situated in the County of A she on the waters of Grassy Creek on the head of Marlin's branch, bounded as follows. Beginni ng at a white oak near the Virginia line....(pole description)....to the beginning?..the sai d M. Baker hereunto hath set his hand....signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of us.

    In 1850 Morris farmed in Wicondah, David Co., IA with his second wife Susan and son Larkin. H e made use of his military service and made a land entry in section 18 in the Wyaconda Townsh ip in Davis County, Iowa for 78 acres. It was granted the 1st of October, 1852. The south bou ndary of section 18 is the Iowa - Missouri border. Morris, with his son Calvin Baker and hi s family, moved on to Fannin County, Texas about 1856.
