Mr. Hull was born in New York City. When he was about four years of age his father moved with his family to the town of Stanford, Dutchess County, N. Y., where there was a settlement of Friends, many of whom were relatives. He received his early education in a boarding school, conducted by Friends at Nine Partners in the same county, which he attended until he was fourteen years of age. Then he was sent to New York to learn the drug business with his brother-in-law, Richard Bowne, whose place of business was at 147 Pearl Street. There he continued his studies, giving special attention to chemistry and attending lectures as opportunities offered on a wide field of scientific subjects. Shortly after reaching his majority he became a member of the firm he had faithfully served. Meantime he had graduated from the New York College of Pharmacy, of which in 1838 he became first vice president, and before which he subsequently delivered a course of lectures on Medical Botany. He was a life member of the New York Mercantile Library Association, and was connected with various other societies and organizations, including the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Society Library Association of New York, and the Masonic Fraternity. In 1845 he moved to the city of Brooklyn, and became associated with the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and the Natural History Society, in both of which he took an active interest, serving at one time as vice-president of the former.
