Anchorage resident Susan Kay Nelson, 46, died of pneumonia July 9, 2004, at Mary Conrad Center.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St. A second memorial service will be next week at Mary Conrad Center.
Ms. Nelson was born Jan. 28, 1958, in Fairbanks. She graduated from East High School in Anchorage. After graduation, she lived in Tacoma for a few years.
She married Rick Nelson on April 20, 1990.
Her family wrote: "In Anchorage, she was employed by Hope Cottages for a time and had a 25-year relationship with the people of Hope, who will sadly miss her. She was proud to have addressed the Alaska Legislature in a campaign on behalf of all people who experience disabilities. Susan had a way of winning people over through her many public speaking engagements to educate the community. She was truly an advocate for people who experience disabilities.
"Despite her own hardships with cerebral palsy, Susan remained cheerful and always wanted to help others. Her sweet smile would light up the room and brighten the hearts of all those who came near. She was a beacon of light and an inspiration for others. She was loved by many and will be missed by all."
The staff at the Mary Conrad Center wrote that Susan brought love and joy into their hearts. They said that she was a kindred spirit of angels.
Survivors include her husband, Rick; father and stepmother, Robert and Blanche Kallstrom; stepfather, Dave Teague; sisters and their husbands, Pam and Ron Johnson, Marsha and Ray Bailey, and Margaret and Sam Pravanzano; nieces, Jennifer Teague, Sara and Carin Bailey, and Jamie Powers; great-nieces and -nephew, Taylor, McKenna and Cooper; step-grandmother, Lena Andre; stepsister, Kristi Stanford and her family; and stepbrothers, Todd and J.D. Palin and their families.
Susan was preceded in death by her twin sister at birth; grandparents, Myrtle Hendrickson and Elmer and Margaret Kallstrom; mother, Joan Teague; and brother, Gary (Teague) Kallstrom.
