Bennett C. Enge, Jr., 69, of Butte, ND, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at a Minot hospital. His funeral was held Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Butte with burial in the Butte Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home in Drake, ND and one hour before the service at the American Legion Hall.
Bennett Enge, Jr., son of Bennett Sr. and Martha (Boersma) Enge, was born October 21, 1934 at Hillhead, SD. At an early age he moved with his family to Veblen, SD where he grew up and attended his first eleven years of school. The family moved to Butte, ND in 1950 and the following year he graduated from Butte High School.
At the age of 15 Bennett began working for the Sooline Railroad during the summer months and following his graduation, began working fulltime. In April of 1956 he entered the United States Marines and served his country until April of 1959. He then returned to the Butte area and continued working for Sooline Railroad for over fifty years. He worked out of several locations including Carrington, Velva, Harvey and Minot. As track inspector, Ben was responsible for the 150 miles of track between Harvey and Portal, a line which was referred to as Ben's Territory. Of the 11,575 retiring railroaders in the United States, Ben was one of only seven with 50 years of service. He retired in May of 2002.
He was a member of the Lawrence E. Meidl American Legion Post #270 of Butte and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.
He is survived by two brothers, Clarence of David City, NE and Vernon (Jean) of Minneapolis, MN; two sisters, Alice (Loren) Martwick of Alexandria, MN and Evelyn (Bob) St. Peter of International Falls, MN; numerous nieces and nephews; his stepmother, Edna Nissen Enge of Fertile, MN; and two stepbrothers, William Nissen and Otto Nissen both of Minot, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
