    "A native of Seattle, Mary Maxwell Gates was a dedicated philanthropist and resourceful civic leader. Her volunteer activities in Seattle and King County included service on the boards of the Children's Hospital Foundation, Seattle Symphony, and United Way of King County, where she was named the first woman president. Recognized for her work with the local organization, Mrs. Gates was appointed to the board of directors of United Way International in 1980 and, in 1985, became the first woman to chair the executive committee.
    During her tenure with United Way, Mrs. Gates helped expedite the explosive growth of her son Bill's fledgling software company. After discussing Microsoft with fellow United Way committee member and IBM chairman John R. Opel, the two companies forged a relationship, which led to Microsoft developing an operating system for IBM's first personal computer. . . .and MS-DOS was born.
    As astute businesswoman and trailblazer, Mrs. Gates was the first woman on the board of First Interstate Bank and served for many years on the boards of Unigard Security Insurance Group, US West Communications, and KIRO Incorporated (television and radio stations).

    A 1950 graduate of the University of Washington, Mrs. Gates was an influential member of the UW Board of Regents, on which she served for 18 years (1975-1993).
