115-YEAR-OLD MINNIE KOTT, AMONG OLDEST IN CHICAGO
By Kenan Heise.
Minnie Kott, 115, a Chicagoan since 1881, was one of the city's oldest residents.
Mrs. Kott, who lived by herself in the Wrightwood neighborhood, died Tuesday in Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.
"She lived for the White Sox," her grandson, William Konkel, said. "Her husband was a friend of Charles Comiskey, the `Old Roman,' who owned the Sox for many years."
Mrs. Kott was born March 7, 1879, in Peru, Ill., the third youngest of 16 children. Her father, George Geringer, served in the Civil War.
In 1881 she moved with her family to Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood. She recalled how they owned mules and that she and a brother would ride them down Halsted Street.
She married Charles Kott in 1899.
Until her last days Mrs. Kott, was a resource on family history and distant relatives came from elsewhere to learn names, dates and residences of family members of long ago.
She and her husband moved to the Avalon neighborhood in 1940 and in 1966 to the Wrightwood neighborhood. There, she lived in a house across the street from her grandson.
Mrs. Kott had been blind for many years until she had a cataract operation on one eye around the age of 100.
She neither smoked nor drank.
Survivors, besides her grandson, include three great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services for Mrs. Kott will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Hornberg-Klein Funeral Home, 2955 W. 95th St., Evergreen Park.
