    HUGH (DE STAFFORD), EARL OF STAFFORD, LORD STAFFORD and LOR D AUDLEY, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir, was born in o r before 1342. On his mother's death in 1348 he succeeded ( according to modern doctrine) as LORD AUDLEY. In 1359 he jo ined the Prince of Wales in Aquitaine, and served there fo r several years. In 1367 he went with the Prince into Spain . On 8 January 1370/1 he was summoned to Parliament v.p. a s Hugh DE STAFFORD; from 6 October 1372 as Hugh, EARL OF ST AFFORD. From 12 February 1372/3 to 12 November 1373 he wa s in commissions. In June 1373 he went to Calais. On 23 Aug ust 1374 he was a guarantor of the King's loan from the Bar di. In 1375 he went with the Duke of Brittany to Brittany . K.G. between 11 November 1375 and April 1376. After 30 Ap ril 1376 he was appointed one of the Earls to consult wit h the Commons, and one of the King's "Continual Councillors ." On the accession of Richard II, he was reappointed to th e Council. From July 1377 to 1386 he was in Commissions. O n 16 July 1377 he carved bread and meat before the King a t his Coronation, at table in the great hall of Westminster . In 1378 he was rebuked for arrogant language towards th e Commons by John Philipot; and on 11 August he slew Rober t Hawksley in the quire of Westminster Abbey. On 8 May 138 3 he was directed to prepare against invasion in Cornwall . On 20 July 1384 he was licensed with his firstborn son Ra lph to hunt in all the King's parks in the presence of th e keepers. In 1385 he was going to Scotland on the King's s ervice; but in October the expedition was abandoned. On 2 0 August 1385 he was appointed steward and bailiff of the H undred of Macclesfield, forester of Macclesfield, and custo dian of the park; on 16 November 1385 he had lent 100 to t he King. On 27 March 1386 he was licensed to voyage to part s overseas.

    He married, before 1 March 1350/1, Philippe, daughter of Th omas (DE BEAUCHAMP), EARL OF WARWICK, by Katharine, daughte r of Roger (DE MORTIMER), 1st EARL OF MARCH. She died befor e 6 April 1386, and was buried at Stone. He died 16 Octobe r 1386 at Rhodes, and was buried at Stone. [Complete Peera ge XII/1:177-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
