  • Note: She died of a heart attack (coronary thrombosis) following 10 years of h ypertensic heart disease and 17 years of diabetes. In the death registr ation, it says that her mother's name was Margaret Campbell, born in Sc otland. Not sure how to reconcile this with the Margaret McPhail Thomso n information unless perhaps Margaret was married to a Mr Campbell befo re she married Edward Smith? Most likely explanation is that the inform ant (her daughter Muriel) was simply uninformed or wrong or under the s tress of her mother's demise. 7 6

      Liverpool Advance: 12 Jan 1898: "The marriage takes place at 11:30 tod ay at St. Andrew's Church, Halifax, by Rev. Dr. Black, of Harry H Thorn e of Hookcross, Muchfield, Hants Co, England to Miss Alice Smith, daugh ter of the late Edward Smith, merchant of Halifax". Note that they got H arry's residence wrong - should be Winchfield or Burghfield.

      There was an Indenture signed by Alice and Harry on 11 Jan 1898 to prot ect Alice's inheritance worth $37,400.32. Almost immediately after the w edding they must have moved to Vancouver since Alice's death registrati on (in 1945) indicates that she had lived in Vancouver for 47 years (si nce 1898).
