    The Will of John Glanville 1580

    In the name of God Amen The Twelfe daye of Januarye in the yeare of our Lord god 1580, And in the Twoe and twentiethe yeare of the Reigne of our Sovereign / Ladye Elizabeth by the grace of god of Englande Fraunce and Irlande Quene defender of the faith / I John Glanville th'elder of Tavistock in the Countie of Devon, beinge whole of mynde and perfecte / of Remembrance praysed be god, adnullinge and revokinge all former wills testament guiftes legacies / bequeathes devises executors and overseers by me in any wise heretofore made doe nowe make my laste / will and testament in manner and forme followinge Imprimis I commend my soule into the handes of / Almightie god my Creator and Saviour And my bodie to be buried Item I give and bequeathe to / my wife Thomasine three of my best milche kyne my best Cloke my black mourninge goune All which / are alreadye delivered unto her and also our Rite of wood in Grenaven with a house in it and a Dooer with / a locke and a key to the same and Fourtie poundes of lawfull money of England which is already delivered / unto her And all such merchandise of myne beinge in A cheste as appearethe by an Inventory thereof made / and valued at Twentie nyne poundes fourtene shillings, and a featherbed, a paire of Blanketts, and a pair of / sheets All which are delivered to her already Also I give unto her Tenne pounds of lawfull money of / Englande to be paide unto her within Three yeares after my deathe

    Item I give devise will and bequeath to Johan Gloubb my daughter, the wife of Richard Gloubbe, All that my Tenement wherein Margery / Hamlyn nowe dwelleth with the gardaine to the same adioyning and all other theire appurtenances being / at Fourde Street within the Burrough of Tavistock in the Countie of Devon And also the / Twoe partes in three partes to be divided of all that one Tenement and a gardaine with th'appurtenances / beinga at Fourde Streete aforesaide now in the tenure of one Richard Shere And all my righte title / possession and revercion of and in the same tenement and gardaine with th'appurtenances and of and in every part / and parcell of the same To have and to hold the saide Tenement and gardaine and the saide twoe partes / in three partes to be divided of the saide Tenement and gardaine with th'appurtenances And all my Right / title possession and .cion of and in the same to the saide Johan Gloubb my daughter and of her heires and / assigns for ever To the onlie use and behoof of the same Johan my daughter and of her heires and Assignes / for ever to be holden of the chief Lordes of the fee thereof by the Rent and services thereof before due and of / right accustomed

    Item I give and bequeath will and devise to Thomas Glanvile my sonne, All my / messuages, Landes tenements and gardeines Rents revercions and hereditaments with theire appurtenances in / the Boroughe of Tavistock aforesaid which I boughte and purchased of Anthony Honychurche deceased / And also all my Landes tenements meadows pastures leases Rents and revercions and hereditaments with theire / appurtenances whatsoever, scituate, lienge, and beinge, cominge, growinge or rentowinge within the parish of Whitchurche in the saide Countie of Devon To have, and to houlde all the saide messuages, Landes, tenements / and gardaines, Rents, revercions and hereditaments with their appurtenances in the saide Borough of Tavistock / which I boughte and purchased of the saide Anthony Honychurch And also all my saide Landes, tenements / meadows, pastures Leases, rents, revercions and hereditaments with th'appurtenances whatsoever with in the / saide parish of Whitchurche to the saide Thomas Glanville my sonne his heires and assigns for ever / to th'onlie use behoofe and profitt of the saide Thomas my sonne his heires and assignes for ever To be holden / of the chief Lordes of the Fee and Fees thereof, by the rents and services thereof before due, and of righte

    Item I give unto Johan Skyrett and to Ales Skerrytt the Daughters of my Daughter Margarett deceased to everie of them / Fourtie shillinges to be paide them when they shal be of th'age of Twentie one yares And if one of them / happen to dye before they be of that age Then th'other livinge to have the whole Foure poundes

    Item I give unto John Glanvill my sonne diverse implements of houshoulde which are delivered unto him already Item I give / unto John Glanville my Sonne, the Lease of the house which I had of Mr Dillington where I now dwell / All the residue of my goods, Chattalls and Debts (not before given nor bequeathed) I give unto Thomas / Glanville my Sonne And him I make my verie true and whole Executor to see this my last Will and Testament performed and all my legacies and bequeathes accomplished according to the true / purpose and meaninge hereof In witness hereof I the saide John Glanville th'elder have sette my hande / and seale upon the Daye and Yeare aforewritten in the presence of those whose names are under written / the Daye and yeare above saide To Robert Knight vicar of Tavistock Edward Dinis, William Grills Richard Gloubb John Bligh

    Writing of John Glanoyle, Senior, of Tavistock, Gent. granting to Thomas Glanvyle and Walter Glubbe all his share, viz. 2/3rds of a garden in the Borough of Tavistock between the land of the poor at le Chappell of St. Mary Magdelene in the Parish of Tavistock on the North and the land of John Fitz Esq, on the South, the land of the heir of Grills on the East and a lane leading from le Chappell of St. Mary Magdelene to a bridge called le Westbridge on the West; to hold to the use of Richard Glubbe and Johanna his wife, for their lives with remainder to John and Benedict Glubbe their sons in tail successively with remainder in default to said John Glanvyle his heirs and assigns for ever.
