It was said that he excelled all others in devotion to the future char acter of New York..For many years he was Examiner-in-Chancery, so impar tial that no one ever appealed his decisions. For 30 years he contribu ted poetry and prose to the periodicals of New York and Philadelphia. F our of his poems are in Kittell's" Specimens of Aerican Poetry". "The N arrative of the Brig Commerce" published in 1817 in London was one of h is most famous but he gave credit to James Riley as the author. He was a f riend of Washington Irving and a member of the author's club, The Drone C lub and The Friendly Club. Anthony was secretary of the City Dispensary . Also trustee of the New York Society Library and secretary of its bo ard of trustees from 1816 until he died where his portrait by W, Dunlap h angs.
He died at the home of his brother-in-law, John Neilson, M.D.
